Training and Informal Match at Scawby - 13 February

About 40 dogs and handlers came to our first training day.  The forecast had been for heavy rain, but the weather was kind and the rain didn’t come until we were packing up to go home.  The ground is excellent and our trainers and judges made full use of the variety of cover.

Our Charity Test in aid of the British Heart Foundation was in memory of Jim Cochrane and also Bryan Capps and Ken Naylor who all passed away as a result of heart problems.  Between them, they had a wealth of knowledge about training and working gundogs and willingly passed this on to anyone who was keen to learn more about the sport.

We had a wonderful day with 40 dogs competing.  There were five interesting exercises (a mark into water and a blind on the bank; a double mark; a picking up exercise; a two dog walk up and a mark over a ditch and into a wood followed by a blind in the same area) to test the dogs and their handlers.

After the working part, competitors, their families and friends enjoyed a sumptuous barbecue, an enormous raffle and an auction of many and various lots including a photo shoot, hampers, a thumbstick, decorated cakes and some very nice wine.

Training and Informal Match at Atterby - 7 May

Our dogs thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity for water training at this compact but varied ground.  The lake is particularly good for puppies learning to swim.  Thirty five members came along for the excellent training, a brilliant double flypast by the Lancaster and the day was rounded off with a good chat over tea and cakes.  Our trainers in the morning were Martin Eveleigh, Casper Jonsen, Gill King and Mike Williams.  Gill King, Ken Brooks and Gill Bell were the judges in the afternoon.

What a wonderful estate this is for a working test!  Twenty two dogs competed in these beautiful surroundings by kind permission of the Parker Shoot.  In the morning, the tests were: a four dummy picking up exercise in a heavily covered dell in a wood; a mark off to the left at the top of the rise of a long track in woods followed by a dummy thrown to the opposite side as the dog returned; a two dog walk up with a long mark into the next field and a blind in the wooded area to the side.  Our judges, Mrs Joan Hayes, Alex Macgregor and Godfrey Lowe put thirteen dogs through for three more tests in the afternoon.  Chief Steward Doreen Spencer had ready a long mark to the other side of a valley; a mark over a sheep fence and a blind under trees; a double mark through bushes.

We thank Mr & Mrs Martin Strawson for allowing us to use this ground, which is lovely for puppy tests. We also thank them for all their preparations that made the day go smoothly. We also thank our sponsors: Chandlers of Belton for the puppies and special puppies and Mason, Baggott & Garton for the Junior Handlers.

Katie Capps and Martin Eveleigh were our judges, watching over fifteen special puppies, ten puppies and three junior handlers. The special puppy tests were heelwork and a single mark in a copse; two dummies; a water retrieve; a memory; and a longer single mark along a track.  Meanwhile the puppies and junior handlers retrieved a single mark; a mark and then a blind in the same place; a dummy from the other side of a stream; a double in long grass and finally a two dog walk up.

The standard of dogs was very good and the junior handlers were impressive. The day was completed with a lovely barbeque. We thank all who helped with the tests and the barbeque to make it a very enjoyable day.

Novice Cold Game Test at Caythorpe - 21 August

The ground at Caythorpe (by kind permission of Mr Richard Ward and Mr Tony Wright) was excellent with lovely views over the valley.  It was a glorious sunny day with just enough breeze to keep the dogs – and handlers - cool and provide good scenting conditions.  Our chief steward was Martin Eveleigh and our judges, Paul Rawlings, Arthur Hewer and David Haycock, quickly put the competitors at ease and made it a very enjoyable day.  Thanks go to them and all our helpers for giving up their time so that we could work our dogs in the sugar beet.

The first two rounds were a six dog walk up: two marks and then a crossing mark.  The thirty dogs were cut to eighteen for the third round: a mark thrown out, a blind behind for one dog and then the mark picked by another dog.

Our judges then took eight dogs through to a drive and a final retrieve.  Three blinds were put out: one in the centre of a stubble field and one close to the hedge at each side.  Handlers had to nominate which bird they were going for before sending their dog across thirty yards of the beet field, over a track with grass and tall weeds on each side and on to the stubble field.  This proved to be a very testing retrieve and showed the winner to be well worthy of ‘open’ status.

1st Geordie Thistle
LR D Mr R Agent (winner of the Ansoncha Shield)
2nd Ronora Brook Flint
LR D Mr Tom Sagar (winner of the Wraggmarsh Shield for the highest placed Lincs Member)

It was a lovely early autumn morning with a gentle breeze – perfect for dogs and handlers.  The sugar beet has grown well at Fenhouses (by kind permission of the Laird family) and Chief Steward Mick Roberts kept handlers on their toes with an unpredictable variety of retrieves.  Our judges were Mick Newsam, Phil Wagland, Casper Jonsen and Sharon Kitson.

Thirty dogs were tested with a mixture of marks and blinds in the morning and the judges cut to thirteen after lunch.  All of these dogs sat steadily for a drive and then had to face a pigeon and rabbit double blind 150 yards away beyond the beet, over a deep ditch and the other side of a stubble field.  All the game had been put out in two sets at right angles to each other before the handlers and dogs had came back to the area after lunch.   Just to test them a little more, two dogs were out at the same time, one looking for its blinds in the correct order in one direction and the other picking in the adjoining field at 90o.  Six dogs survived for a final long blind.

Our thanks go to our judges, chief steward and, of course, all of our helpers.  The throwers put the birds up to a good height and the guns didn’t miss, making it a really good day for everyone.
