Training and Working Tests 2024

Training is organised by the Area, with a charge of £5 per dog per session. One dog only per handler. Training is on occasional Sunday afternoons at 2pm (4 full days this year) or Friday evenings from 7pm (see programme). Tea will be provided after the 2pm training. Please bring your own cup if possible.

Training is divided into classes: 1, Puppies and Beginners; 2, Novice; 3, Intermediate; 4, Advanced (depending on numbers).

Venues. We use different grounds to provide variety of training and tests. Directions to this year’s grounds are listed below. 

 

Feb 4 AGM and annual lunch. Lunch is 12 midday. AGM starts 2 pm
March 10 Training: Manton Pit Wood, Worksop, Notts. Starts 2 pm
March 24          Training: Welbeck Estate, Notts. Starts 2 pm
April 14 Training: Strines Moor, South Yorkshire. Starts 2 pm
April 28 Novice/Veteran Working Tests, Welbeck Estate, Notts. 9.30 for 10 am start
May 5 Open Working Test, Strines Moor, South Yorkshire. 9.30 for 10 am start
May 19 Training: Church Farm (formerly The Slips), Caunton, Notts. Starts 2 pm
June 2 Training (all day): Roanlodge Gundog Training Ground, nr Buxton. Morning: Puppy/Novice, 9.30 for 10am. Afternoon: Open, approx 1.30pm, £5 per dog                                                
June 16 Training: Wharncliffe Chase, South Yorkshire. Puppy/Novice/Open in the morning, with special test in the afternoon at approx. 1 pm. £5 per dog. Start 9.30 for 10 am
June 28 Training: Manton Pit Wood, Worksop, Notts. Starts 7 pm
July 13 Training (all day): East Stoke, Puppy/Novice in the morning, Open in the afternoon (approx. 1 pm). £5 per dog. Starts 9.30 for 10 am
July 21

Intermediate/Novice, Puppy and ND/NH Working Tests, Strines Meadows, South Yorkshire. 9.30 for 10am start

Aug 11 Training (all day): Church Farm, Caunton, Notts. Morning training, afternoon tests (approx. 1 pm). £5 per dog. Followed by a barbecue. 9.30 for 10 am start
Aug 18 Training: Shirebrook Country Park. Starts 7 pm
Sept 8 Open Working Test (in roots), Edwinstowe, Notts. 9.30 for 10 am start
Sept 29 Training (walked up), Strines Moor, South Yorkshire. Starts 2 pm

Working Test Schedule


APRIL 28    NOVICE & VETERAN:  Welbeck Estate, Notts   9.30 for 10am

Novice: for dogs that have not gained a first place in a Novice Test or a first, second or third place in an Open Test or any FT Award. Veteran: for dogs 8 years or older on the day of the test. 

Directions Welbeck: From the B6034 Worksop to Budby road turn West at Carburton crossroads, near the Tea Rooms (S80 3BP). Follow the road towards Norton & Cuckney for one mile. The car park is adjacent to the road. Follow URC signs, taking care as you turn.

MAY 5    OPEN: Strines Moor  9.30am for 10am

This test will be used to select the team for the URC Area Finals.

Directions Strines Moor: From the A57 between Sheffield and Ladybower turn North onto minor road signed “Strines” towards Strines Inn S6 6JE, but at first junction follow URC sign either straight on or turning right, depending on the location for the day. Continue until you find signs for URC parking in field or at roadside. 

 

JULY 21   INTERMEDIATE/NOVICE Walked up test: Strines Meadow   9.30am for 10am

Intermediate: for dogs that have not gained a first place in an Intermediate or Open Test or first, second or third in a Field Trial.  Novice: for dogs that have not gained a first place in a Novice Test or a first, second or third place in an Open Test or any FT Award.

JULY 21   PUPPY and NOVICE DOG /NOVICE HANDLER tests: Strines Meadow   9.30 am for 10am

Puppy for dogs under 18 months old on the day of the test 

Novice Dog/Novice Handler: neither dog nor handler to have won any award (including COM) at a field trial, or first, second, third, fourth or COM at an open or All Aged test or first place in any working test.

Directions as for Strines Moor and follow URC signs to the test site.

 

SEPT 8  OPEN walked up in roots: Edwinstowe, North Notts  9.30 for 10am

Limited to 30 dogs. This test will be on dummies but run on FT lines, mostly walked up in roots. Eliminating faults will apply. Preference to qualified Open dogs and to North Midland members.

Directions Edwinstowe: The meet will be signed off the A6075 between Edwinstowe and Mansfield. Approx. Postcode NG21 9HG, subject to which field is to be used

 

Additional judges for any test will be appointed as required. 

Entries for all tests are £10.00. Entries are required 7 days prior to test.

Cheques or cash please. Cash can be paid on the day. No BACS payments.

Members may also enter the tests of other URC Areas. There may be a limit on numbers of entries.

Inoculations are required for all the usual canine diseases. Dogs attending any meeting must be free from recent contact with infection. Dogs should be under control and must not be disciplined in public.

Field Trials are run by the main club and events may be in any Area. There is a 2 day Open Stake, 3 or more Novice stakes and an All–aged stake. FT Secretary: Mrs R Warner. For schedules, download from the website or email: urcfieldtrial@gmail.com. To enter trials dogs must be experienced on game and free from eliminating faults. Newcomers should read KC FT Rules and learn about trials by watching or assisting.

DIRECTIONS TO GROUNDS

Church Farm (formerly The Slips), Caunton, Notts NG23 6AF. Caunton village is between Ollerton and Newark, just off A616. In village follow signs.

Carr Dyke Farm, East Stoke, Notts NG23 5PZ. From the A46 South of Newark at the Roundabout take the turning for Farndon (Old Fosse Rd). Pass through Easte Stoke and at the crossroads turn left into Moor Rd. After Approx 1 mile look for a sign on the right for Carr Dyke Farm

Edwinstowe, Notts.  The meet will be signed off the A6075 between Edwinstowe and Mansfield, approx postcode NG21 9HG depending on which field will be used.

Manton Pit Wood, Worksop, Notts S80 2RS. Turn off the A57 at the roundabout at the E end of the Worksop by-pass, taking B6040 road towards Worksop Town centre. Turn into car park on left at roundabout opposite Manton Wood Enterprise Park.

Roanlodge Gundog Training Ground, Derbyshire SK17. Roanlodge is on the A53 from Buxton to Leek. Look for URC sign.

Shirebrook Country Park, Notts/Derbyshire, NG19 8LP. From A60 Worksop-Warsop road turn onto B6031 through Warsop Vale. After skew bridge turn left at Mansfield sign onto Longster Lane towards Sookholme and Mansfield. Car park is on the right just before hamlet of Sookholme.

Wharncliffe Chase. The meet is at Chase Lodge, Woodhead Road, Wortley, South Yorkshire S35 7DA. Leave M1 at Junction 35A (or J36 from North). At junction 35A, take the A616 exit to Manchester. At the roundabout, continue straight onto A616. At Westwood Roundabout, take the 2nd exit and stay on A616. Next take the exit towards Woodhead Rd. Turn right onto Woodhead Rd. Continue on Woodhead Road towards Grenoside until a URC sign directs you to turn right onto a private drive (10 mph) to Chase Lodge. Go through the big gate (please keep closed) and follow the farm road across the Chase.
