Novice Walked up Working Test at Caythorpe on Sunday September 7th 2025
We were at Caythorpe by kind permission of Mr G R Ward and we thank him for allowing us to use a massive sugar beet field for our test. We also had a massive entry of 38 good dogs. The test was run on field trial lines and, unless eliminated, all the dogs had five retrieves and many very fine retrieves there were.
We thank our judges, Paula Cullis, Steve Cullis, Tom Unwin and Scott Ford, who had a long day in line and our sponsors Skinners and Forest Lodge Guns. Jessica Burrows was our Chief Steward.
Our judges provided our handlers with an excellent and interesting variety of retrieves, brilliantly supported by our throwers and shooters. The retrieves were of a gradually increasing difficulty and distance as the test progressed. Throughout, there was a mixture of marks, blinds, crossing retrieves and marks and blinds behind. Sometimes there was one dummy out, sometimes two, even three at times. There were retrieves over the hedge, at the base of the hedge, two marks that landed fairly close together, dummies landing beyond the line of the line.
Finally, the judges decided on a sixth retrieve run off for seven dogs. It was a dummy landing to the left of and a little behind the line. The dogs were placed at the righthand end of the line for their retrieve.
